A special Maker's Mark selection for Amazon stores? What a surprising and intriguing find! Identified as "Rufus Reserve," this limited release (marked #004/246) bears a strong resemblance to another limited bottling, "Honeysuckle Breeze." The aroma is less sweet and rich than Honeysuckle Breeze, presenting caramel with a touch of sharpness. Unlike certain cask strength Maker's selections, this one clearly reflects its proof. The scent fades into a darker, sweet note akin to dark baker's chocolate. The initial taste is somewhat subdued and delayed, but then it bursts with the flavor of yeasty sweet rolls. This taste expands into ripe honeydew melons. The finish carries that dark chocolate from the nose, mixed with bitterness and a slightly chalky texture. The bitterness persists as the finish concludes, bringing a faint musty aroma like leather. These Private Selection bottlings are consistently enjoyable, but I feel they don't quite match the quality of the Maker's Mark Wood Finishing Series. Nevertheless, for a fair price on what seems to be a rather scarce item, it's an enjoyable sipper offering complexity beyond regular Maker's Mark.
