Mackmyra Moment Bärnsten

This is a fascinating spirit. Imagine a fusion of an Islay, a Highlander, and a tropical Kavalan or Amrut. The nose offers blueberries with a whisper of smoke. The taste is of fruits grilled over charcoal, specifically a blend of mangoes, pineapples, and berries, all steeped in red wine, with a faint hint of smoke. It's akin to sangria accompanied by grilled meats. The finish is long with a diminishing warmth. While unavailable in the US, it's a unique and worthwhile spirit to acquire if your travels take you abroad.

The aroma gradually opened up, eventually revealing sweet wine notes (similar to Jefferson Groth cask bourbon), toffee, candied orange peel, abundant dark berries, and a hint of mint at the top. At just under 50% ABV, it's pleasantly warming on the palate. The second sip brings juicy currants and a suggestion of cherry brandy, with a character reminiscent of sweet vermouth or 'essence of a manhattan'. The finish is quite brisk but satisfying.

Review of Mackmyra Moment Mareld - placed here! Despite its name referencing the phenomenon of bioluminescent plankton, the Mareld does not actually glow. It does, however, smell of smoke and sweet licorice, anise, flambéed pears, and a bit of pine. Skål! The dram itself is potent and robust, warming the throat as it goes down. It's the best Mackmyra I've had to date. It has a distinct iodine taste, smoke, white pepper, and pine resin, but there's a new depth to it, likely from the sherry cask finishing. Speaking of finishes, this has peat and pine, and a hint of cumin, very Swedish.
