Macallan 12 year gran reserva

It appears that Taiwan and Japan have struck a deal with the heavens to acquire the most sherry-matured spirits available. They boast impressive Glenlivet sherry expressions (13 and 15 years) and now this Macallan 12 Gran Reserva, which carries an exorbitant price tag of $700, a steep cost for a 12-year-old spirit, or perhaps not. The Macallan Gran Reserva is a series of intensely sherry-matured Macallans, of which I've only encountered mentions a few times. I've managed to get a sample; keep in mind my typical reservations about any Macallan, as I often find them overpriced. Presented at 45.6% alcohol by volume, it has a striking chestnut hue. The aroma is otherworldly. Blackberry jam, macerated red fruits; lovely dark fruits. Hints of hazelnut. Figs soaked in dulce de leche. A subtle spice emerges from the dark fruits; the aroma faded after the initial taste. Glazed ham. The hazelnut has merged with the red fruitiness, creating something incredible. Pop Tarts. It's an aroma from beyond this world. A chocolate bar. I am captivated by its scent. A perfect score. On the palate, it is outstanding. A rich grape caramel, blackberries, oak spice, and sawdust. Very wine-like. It's a blend of dates, blackberries, and figs. Toffee for a moment, then a remarkable note of aged grapes; a winey character that is simply fantastic. It's like the essence of a fig. The finish could be more prolonged. Red wine, cabernet sauvignon, sawdust. A bit brief, very refined. Grape skins. A trace of smoke and tobacco appeared on the third taste, which was exceptional. Red fruit skins. In summary, this is how Macallan should be. If this were their standard quality, no other brand could compete. This Gran Reserva is a magnificent work of art, but excessively expensive and hard to find. I am certain this is one of the bottlings that established the brand's reputation. Unfortunately, they are not produced for the average consumer. I feel fortunate to have experienced it; my rating is 98 out of 100.

Exceptional complexity and depth, not typical of a standard Macallan pour. A beautiful, lengthy finish with a drying sensation characteristic of whiskies from the islands. A rare discovery and a superb dram to savor.
