Laphroaig 25 Year Cask Strength (2009 Edition)

This is one of those amazing opportunities to get a dram that's difficult to find (and afford), the Laphroaig 25yo. My hopes were sky-high for this one, as I'm a peat enthusiast and a fan of the distillery. Does it truly live up to the hype? Let's find out. Bottled at 48.9% ABV. The nose delivers everything you'd expect from a Laphroaig: a smell that seems undrinkable. But you know that's a good sign, right? Medicinal, iodine, hospital, fabric softener, lemon air freshener, and grapefruit are the notes I detected on the nose. It's citrusy and medicinal. The peat feels 'settled.' A perfect score here. The palate is unique in some aspects, but these notes aren't my personal favorites, so I marked it down a bit, even though they are interesting: mint, herbal extracts, green tea, and grass. Very peculiar, interesting stuff. Far too herbal. The aftertaste was too conventional for a Laphroaig, offering nothing new, though it was still a great finish: peat, earth, iodine, salt, and smoke. Overall, I believe this is an excellent dram, but I've had other Laphroaigs, like Lore, An Cuan Mor, or even the Three Wood, that are just as good for a third of the price. This bottle isn't excessively expensive, but it's not cheap either (around $350). My rating for it is 93 out of 100. Cheers!

The deep amber color is characteristic of sherry, with legs that quickly coat the glass. The aroma is dominated by sherry, accompanied by smoke, seaweed, brine, ripe fruitiness, and a whisper of straw. The palate is rich and smoky, delivering the classic Laphroaig profile but with a smoother character than younger versions. The sherry's sweetness perfectly counterbalances the peat, creating a harmonious blend. The finish is of medium length, maintaining a smoky presence while the fruity sweetness gently recedes.

The liquid has a deep amber hue, as expected from sherry, with legs that immediately coat the glass. Sherry is prominent on the nose, alongside smoke, seaweed, brine, ripe fruitiness, and a hint of straw. The palate is rich and smoky, filling the mouth with the typical Laphroaig character, but it's much smoother than the younger versions. The sherry's sweetness perfectly counterbalances the peat, with both flavors harmonizing and maintaining equilibrium. The finish is of medium length, leaving the mouth smoky while the fruity sweetness gently recedes.
