Lagavulin Distillery Exclusive 2023

This year's Lagavulin Distillery Exclusive release presented differently. Matured in an Ex-Bourbon & Heavily Charred American Oak cask, this single malt was bottled at a robust 56.5% ABV. I was quite intrigued by this dram, having previously enjoyed a heavily charred Lagavulin, the third Offerman edition, which was outstanding. It seemed logical that a cask strength version of that whisky would be even superior. On the nose, I detect bourbon and peat notes. It reminds me of wet Converse shoes; rubber tires. Vanilla custard and coconut are present, along with a Sharpie marker scent. Unconventional but captivating. Vanilla fondant, coconut, and meringue. On the palate, three distinct bourbon-like notes are well-executed. It's like vanilla ice cream with ashes. Lemon and gooseberries. Aftertaste was exceptional. Ashes, bonfire, chili. A very "meaty" finish. It possesses considerable character, with a subtle maritime undertone. Overall, I find most Lagavulins stunning; however, this one was too direct and lacked complexity. Nevertheless, the notes it presented were skillfully crafted and delicious. It's a wonderful whisky, but it loses some points because it feels somewhat subdued, meaning it could have been better. My rating is 94 out of 100.

I'm quite fond of this one. A nice classic Lagavulin aroma, a robust body, and a long-lasting finish. It carries a lot of oak and burnt flavors.

Smoky, peaty aroma, with even more peat. Sweetness, like glazed meat. Incredibly smooth. Perhaps a hint of iodine.

A good balance of smoke and sweetness. Really enjoyable.
