Recall my previous assessment where I had the distinct pleasure of sampling the Lagavulin 25yo, 200th Anniversary edition? Indeed, I must consider myself quite fortunate, as this evaluation pertains to another Lagavulin 25 years old, but this instance, directly from the cask to my glass, served by none other than the esteemed Ian McArthur. During the distillery warehouse tour, this was the concluding dram, originating from a cask that, according to Ian, commanded a price of approximately 500,000 pounds for the entire barrel. The occasion could not have been more exceptional... you might presume... yet we were presented with not one, but two drams of this magnificent spirit. Poured at 52% ABV, from a singular sherry butt. On the nose, it is quite remarkable. Thick cherry syrup, delightful red fruit notes, and a briny essence. Caramel. A combination of the sea and sweetness. Oranges. Following an initial taste, the scent evolved into berries and red fruits; chocolate milk. Puffs of smoke emerged. Tangerine. On the palate, this dram is very refined, though slightly diluted. Oranges, very easily consumed; Sawdust. It resembles oak-infused water, elegant and simple to drink. Not overly potent. Orange and orange chocolate. Coconut. The finish evokes a peat kiln that has mellowed over time. It possesses an "echo" or a subtle smokiness. Very smooth. Salt. Warm. Sawdust In summation, this was an outstanding whisky, though not superior to the 200th anniversary bottling. I feel unqualified to score such a beverage, but as I am an unapologetic scoundrel, I shall assign a rating. For me, it earned 23 out of 25 points across all four whisky criteria: nose, palate, finish, and overall harmony. Having stated this, I never evaluate a whisky based on its cost. My rating for it is a well-earned 92 out of 100. My insides are awash in gold after consuming the two portions. Cheers!
