A decent but not exceptional whisky. It carries the signature smoky and briny character of Lagavulin, with an intensity reminiscent of their cask strength expressions. It leans vegetal, possibly due to the virgin oak finish. A bitterness and spiciness permeate the palate; combined with the brine, it evokes the sensation of eating fresh olives. While not unpleasant, it's somewhat overpowering. Having bought this at the distillery makes it personally significant, but I wouldn't actively search for another. Given the limited bottling of around 6000, this is likely for the best. I generally have reservations about virgin oak, believing it can dominate the spirit, which is a shame considering Lagavulin's excellent base. However, this is among the better virgin oak Scotches I've encountered. If I desired a straightforward 12-year cask strength, I would simply opt for that release. Variety is good.

This spirit is not for the timid; it's a classic Lag that's a bit fiery and has a slight bitterness, but after a couple of glasses, it ranks among the best I've ever had, with a very long and smooth texture. 😋
Exceptional, one of the finest Lag12 expressions I've encountered. It's well-balanced yet robust in every aspect. The nose is pleasant, and the finish is strong and enduring, leaving one feeling quite thirsty.
The aroma is salty and briny, with a gentle, subtle peat on the palate. I might consider buying it, but it doesn't particularly stand out.
Heavily smoky, perfect for a special 80th birthday party.
