L'Encantada "Yak Pack"

This is a Domaine Lous Pibous 1996. Barrel #185. A private bottling. It resembles some of the other private barrel Armagnacs appearing in groups. Nose- Grapes and figs are prominent, and the oak is dominant. This is a rich, full-bodied nose that invites you with oak and sweetness. Palate- There's a wonderful jellied orange slice followed by vanilla cream, reminiscent of a dreamsicle. The oak asserts itself around the mid-palate, followed by a flavor of... dare I say, strawberry Starbursts??? There's a waxiness here, just like in the candy, but it's a familiar and welcome characteristic of youth! Dangerously drinkable compared to higher proof options. Incredibly rich. Finish- A nice juicy finish, almost like orange marmalade, with some dryness and wood to balance the fruitier notes. Overall- I am quite pleased with this mid-aged Armagnac. Regarding the price... it might be a bit steep, considering you can easily find a quality hors d'age off the shelf for under $100, though not one that's hand-selected and at cask strength. The richness from the higher proof is exquisite, and my impression is that the finely aged Armagnacs I've had (40-50 year range) are superior in form and function, but different in their own way. Where they possess a more polished, buttery, and barrel-funky appeal, this has a younger, livelier, rougher, and more playful charm. Everything has its time, and the point here is clearly made. All in all, this is a quality and well-chosen armagnac.
