About this bottle
Founded in 1910, Matsui Shuzo has a long history of producing shochu. The small Matsui Distillery is situated in Tottori, a prefecture on the southern coast of Honshu in Japan's Chūgoku region. Their whiskies are distinguished by the use of pure subterranean water from the Daisen Mountains during maturation. This is a 100% malt whisky, created by blending sourced Scotch malt whisky with Japanese malt whisky. The Kurayoshi whisky matures in ex-bourbon barrels for eight years before bottling.

A lovely Japanese whisky. This is a blend that also includes Scotch whiskies but is finished in white oak. Unsure of its specific flavor contribution, but the resulting drink is delightful. The nose is quite light, but it offers many flavors. Floral, grassy, fresh, and almost medicinal with some nuttiness and a hint of smoke. The flavor is sweet and somewhat tart, yet extremely smooth and very well-balanced. The taste includes the nuttiness I've noticed in other Japanese whiskies, like un-toasted peanuts, along with a fresh, grassy profile. The aftertaste is quite floral, with a medium finish. It's a very easy-drinking whisky. Wonderful.

This is a smooth, Japanese Pure Malt Whisky from Matsui Shuzo Distillery in Tottori Prefecture, Japan. It's made with 100% malted barley, a mix of malt from Scotland and Japan, and uses spring water from Mount Daisen. It was aged for 8 years in ex-bourbon white oak barrels. The aroma is pleasant with hints of almonds and malt. The taste is rich and fruity, featuring green apple, almond, orange zest, and vanilla caramels, leading to a delicate, medium-length finish with notes of oak, port, and sherry. Tasting dates include May 2020, February, April, September 2021, and May, August 2022.

To me, this tasted very much like a typical scotch, which made sense when I saw the details indicating it was a Scottish/Japanese blend. It's not as enjoyable as other Japanese whiskies I've tried. There's a noticeable amount of oak from the bourbon barrels, along with almond. I probably wouldn't buy this, but it wasn't unpleasant.

Nose: Unripe pears, green apples, and wheat.
Taste: Sweetness with pears, dark honey, and a deep earthy flavor unlike any whiskey I've encountered. Hints of malt.
Finish: Reminiscent of decomposing cut grass. Starts pleasantly like a decent highland scotch, but the finish is off-putting.

Nose: vanilla, honey, sweet. Body: medium. Palate: spice, floral, vanilla sweetness, peppery with a light malt. Finish: medium. My impression: It's okay, but I'd prefer more body. It also makes me question if all Japanese whiskey contains rice, like their secret ingredient.
