An elegant Japanese Blended Whisky from Tokinosakura / Helios Distillery in Kushu, Japan, made with peat from Hokkaido's marshes. Heavily peated spirit is then blended with other Okinawa Single Malts after years in American oak casks. The blend is subsequently finished in used Japanese Rum barrels. It begins with forest-like notes of moss, leaves, hints of vanilla, soft malt, and dried apricot; a balanced middle adds notes of spices, peat, earthy smoke, and light rum, leading to a long, peaty, and toasty finish with pepper notes. This was unexpected. Hadn't heard of it before. Bought one at the Mitsuwa in NJ. The aroma was very pleasing with light plum, tropical fruits, sweet nectar, and a bit of maltiness. The taste is sweet with mild flavors from the aroma. The finish is medium length with a little heat and mild rum taste. There is the slightest background hint of smoke. Pairs well with Japanese cuisine. Had it with shabu shabu tonight. It was surprisingly good.

Nose: Grape, an old sneaker scent, and port wine. Palate: Interesting, not one-dimensional. Starts with graham cracker and marshmallow, then moves into port wine and fruity notes. The finish has a slight peated sensation and a mild buzz. Ratings: Nose: 7, Front: 7, Middle: 8, Back: 7. Adding water brings out more alcohol, citrus, and possibly peach flavors.

Ugh, this was simply not good. Not balanced at all. Hot on the front end even though it's only 40% alcohol by volume. It has an odd finish, like a burnt aftertaste. I tried it in a highball thinking it would be better, but that aftertaste persists. I’m not sure what to do with this bottle.

I'm not getting much from this one. The aroma is faint, somewhat sweet and fruity. That carries through to the flavor as well. It's all just too subdued and light for my preference. I do find it very smooth and easy to drink, however.

Aroma: Slightly sweet, peat, damp wood Taste: Smooth, light barley and grains, light peat, a little bit of slight wood flavor Enjoying this much more than before. Good stuff although pretty mellow and light overall.
