Imagine stepping out of a time machine into 2006, a year when people were enthusiastic about Nintendo's new Wii and buzzing about Google's massive acquisition of YouTube. If you found yourself on Islay around that time, you might have witnessed the new Kilchoman distillery filling its inaugural barrels. Sixteen years on, a portion of that oldest spirit has been combined for their 2022 Feis Ile offering. The nose of this whisky, crafted from five bourbon barrels, presents warm bread and sweet grain aromas, with a subtle farm-like, lactic undertone. These flavors continue onto the palate, which is rich and reminiscent of warm brioche soaked in sweet butter. The finish echoes the bready notes, enhanced by honey and a hint of gentle spice. This is a powerfully flavored, well-balanced whisky without any harshness, ideal for introducing someone to Scotch. Its character leans more towards a Speyside or Highland style than an Islay one, if that matters to you. While not Kilchoman's most intricate release (the Casado I also sampled offered more depth), it serves as an elegant, classic whisky that is highly satisfying.
