Kahlúa Especial

Rating: 8/23 Nose: I detect coffee, some sourness, and faint roasted notes, but also a substantial amount of powdered sugar. The aroma is surprisingly light and not particularly inviting. It does have a somewhat syrupy, herbal quality, reminiscent of root beer. For comparison, the standard version offers a more complex nose with added earthy spice and chocolate. This version is oilier with more alcohol, and possibly a bit more rum funk. The rum is more prominent, but I'm uncertain if it improves upon the standard version, as it merely amplifies the low-quality rum characteristics. It might be good over ice cream, however. Palate: Smooth, sweet, rich, roasty, followed by powdered sugar. It's syrupy with hints of cinnamon, pepper, and an odd anise note. Faint suggestions of chocolate are present, more like chocolate syrup. There's not much complexity, and the powdered sugar is very dominant. I had hoped for a stylistic variation closer to older versions, but unfortunately, it tastes much like the current standard, albeit with slightly more alcohol. The standard version is sweeter and more syrupy with less noticeable alcohol, but it possesses more chocolate and interesting spices, making it tastier and helping to mask the powdered sugar, at least until the finish. This clearly emphasizes the rum more. It's less sweet, with more wood and smoke, but also a significantly stronger alcohol presence. Sadly, the rum used is not of high quality. It would have been excellent with a more characterful rum, like a specific brand or a solid choice like another, but unfortunately, this remains un sippable, unlike older versions. Some sulfur notes are present. It's less balanced, spicy, and enjoyable than the standard. It also has an herbal quality, similar to a digestif, but with unpleasant cola notes. While the standard version is unique, this constantly brings to mind poor quality syrupy rum. Perhaps there's also a hint of tobacco. Finish: Powdered sugar and chocolate with a slightly roasted character, possibly with some tobacco notes. Rum, black licorice, and some cola elements. Not much is happening here, regrettably. It's a difficult choice between this and the standard version, both of which I would purchase. The price difference is negligible, but this one lacks complexity, so the higher alcohol content isn't a clear advantage. In fact, I typically use the standard version in a dessert for work, where higher alcohol is actually a disadvantage. At least the standard version is its own distinct, enjoyable entity. The powdered sugar in the standard version gives me pause, but this truly resembles low-quality syrupy rum mixed with a digestif and perhaps some coffee. I believe it warrants a score of 7 to 8. I'll assign an 8 for now. It's better than generic options, but perhaps I should still stick with the standard version. What a letdown.

Response: 9/23 I've heard this is an improved Kahlúa, quite similar to the older kind. It seems like exactly what I need, so let's see! Nose: A disappointing start, not much happening. A little cola and licorice, somewhat like Jagermeister but not strong or complex. Maybe a hint of mushroom, but it's hard to discern much. Palate: Less thick than standard Kahlúa, but with a more potent, sharper alcohol presence. It's less sugary, making it more bitter. It doesn't really taste roasted or spiced. There's some chocolate alongside a slightly salty black licorice. It's disappointingly straightforward. I detect hints of rum with caramel and bitterness, but they don't seem like high-quality rum or possess any real depth. With the odd rum, alcohol, and coffee notes, it strangely takes on a bit of a tequila character. Finish: Lingering cola with some coffee and chocolate. The warmth takes a while to fade. I don't get the chalky confectioner's sugar sensation I do with regular Kahlúa. It's certainly not terrible, but I sadly think I like regular Kahlúa a tiny bit more. If regular Kahlúa is an 11, this is more like a 9 or 10. I'll give it a 10, but I'm not a fan.
