About this bottle

Mike and Patti Sherlock established Fremont Mischief Distillery on the shores of the Lake Washington Ship Canal in Seattle, Washington. The distillery's wood paneling and dark metal crow motifs reflect Mike's background as a shipyard owner and commercial fisherman. John Jacob Rye Whiskey, named after Patti's grandfather, is based on his original recipe: a mash of 90% Pacific Northwest rye and 10% malted barley. The mash is pot distilled and then aged in oak, resulting in a light to medium amber color.

By the fourth day of a six-day cruise, I was weary of scotch. The ship's bars offered a selection of scotch whiskies, all of which I sampled. Needing a change, I requested a rye with two ice cubes. This is what was served. It was a fine rye whiskey! It offered a mild sweetness followed by delightful barrel notes of vanilla, caramel, and oak. I was very pleased to set aside the scotch and conclude the cruise with my newly discovered rye. Now, I just need to find it here in Maryland.

The aroma is like perfume, very intriguing. The flavor echoes the botanicals and rye spice, surprisingly similar to gin. Quite light, with little body and not much intensity. Still, an interesting take on a rye.
