Jim Beam Rye

Spicy! Note: this review is with ice. I sampled this at a local bar served on the rocks. Nose: vanilla, overly ripe bananas, and rye spice. Palate: initial spice, followed by an earthy/wet soil mid-palate (in a pleasant way), with more spice. Finish: dry and spicy with a bitter, rye bread note. A hint of dark chocolate runs through the mid-palate, finish, and aftertaste. I enjoyed this considerably - perhaps the good company and the celebratory occasion contributed. I might revisit it neat under more objective circumstances. It didn't seem like a $20 USD rye whisky. Considering price/value, I align with the expert rating and award it 86 points for four stars.

Aroma: Some spices - nutmeg, white pepper, cloves. Very simple and one dimensional. Taste: Bland. More caramel and bourbon-like than any other rye I've tasted, but very low key. Conclusion: Barely any at all - the taste just dwindles quickly. The least impressive rye I've tasted - it's like it has been diluted to the point where all character has vanished. There is nothing actively unpleasant about it, but it has no presence or character. You can buy much better bottom shelf rye whiskies so I'm rating it as not quite "Adequate". "Inferior": 69/100 (1.75 stars)

Nose: Spicy notes of clove and pepper, alongside cherry, caramel, and toffee. Palate: Flavors of vanilla, caramel, and spices (just like the nose – clove and pepper!), with Maraschino cherries. This rye certainly has a significant peppery kick and heat. Finish: The finish is brief. Hints of caramel, white pepper, and cherries, with a slight tannic and dry sensation lingering. I was unexpectedly pleased with this rye. It's drier than many ryes I've experienced before, featuring vanilla, caramel, and a strong presence of dry spices like white pepper and cloves. It's not a bad offering at all for a bottle under £30.

Nose: Cherry, caramelized banana, nutmeg, white chocolate Palate: Vanilla, cinnamon, red apples Finish: Black pepper, cherry It's exceptionally smooth and doesn't linger long after sipping, fading into the background rather quickly. It's a suitable introductory rye, likely best for mixing in cocktails.

It's not particularly outstanding on its own, but it was my initial experience with rye so I was unsure. A subtle spice hits the tongue. If you're going to mix whiskey, it's brilliant with coke. It holds onto a lot of character, even if you don't intend to completely overwhelm it.

It doesn't smell like a rye, reminiscent of Jim Beam. However, the taste is definitely rye, with spice and cane sugar, and a richer body than anticipated. It has some depth. It's acceptable; I actually expected it to be less impressive.
