James E. Pepper 1776 Straight Bourbon (100 Proof) Brown Label

A robust, deeply sweet aroma is tempered by abundant spice and noticeable ethanol. Notes of molasses, cherries preserved in syrup, chocolate, white pepper, baking spices, bay leaf, dried mint, scorched oak, and vanilla buttercream create a very enjoyable scent. The initial taste is a mix of sweet and bitter, with an almost tart quality, really delivering on the "Pepper" with cracked peppercorns and cayenne. The bitterness quickly subsides, giving way to brown sugar, crème de menthe, and cherry vanilla cola, while the spice persists. The texture is smooth and substantial. The spirit adheres to the glass tenaciously, developing a skirt that beads up fast but bleeds slowly. As thin, uniform legs form, it maintains its integrity almost perfectly unbroken, like obedient soldiers. The finish offers hints of orange peel, mild oak, more vanilla, subtle lingering herbal notes, cigar wrappers, some pomegranate, rose petals, and a touch of toasted coconut. Excellent neat or on ice. The scent features honey and floral elements. Oak and leather follow, with continued light floral notes. A gentle warmth is present throughout. The finish has a satisfying linger with a char and the faintest hint of Roses. Adding ice makes no difference. Decent value for the cost.

Acquired this for around $25. Exceeds expectations for its cost. Some warmth on the nose, with a mix of old spice and RC cola. Tastes of Vanilla Coke and a pleasant warmth at the end.

While not incredibly complex, the unfiltered mouthfeel is excellent. The term smooth is overused, but any warmth from this doesn't become apparent until long after swallowing.

Despite its alcohol content, it's smooth. The finish is marked by intense rye notes, yet it starts sweet and mellow. A robust bourbon with a rye focus.

Excellent sweet flavor but a really harsh finish. If it had been aged longer, it might have mellowed into something amazing.
