As the chill sets in, I'm remembering island journeys. How about you? I recall being stopped in my tracks by the sight of this substantial, embossed glass bottle in a little shop for tourists near Negril. I appreciate a fine dark rum, so this impressive "king of the jungle" Jamaican Lion Dark Rum came home with me. My initial scent of Jamaican Lion Dark Rum offers malt, caramel, and rubbing alcohol. After roughly 10 minutes, a distinct tangy funk emerges, similar to sweaty gym socks (a delightful image, I'm sure). Drinking this straight melts my face. I get a surge of burnt caramel and charred spices with intense heat. Although the label states 40% ABV, it hits much harder. The lingering taste is the highlight over a long, drying finish. I detect reminiscent burnt sugar on top of crème brûlée, which excites my sweet tooth. This is what tempts me to take another sip. I would not choose to drink this on its own. I'm certain it would perform well in a punch, with cola, or in a cocktail that can match its power. The bottle is visually appealing for the bar, but I would not suggest the purchase. 4.5/10
