About this bottle
The 2023 limited edition Twice Barreled Heritage Barrel Rye begins with fully aged Jack Daniel's Tennessee Straight Rye (70% rye, 18% corn, 12% malted barley mash bill). After charcoal mellowing, it matured for a minimum of 5 years in new, charred American oak barrels. Subsequently, the rye spent an additional 2 years in secondary barrels constructed at the Jack Daniel Cooperage with heavy toasting and light charring. This release became available nationwide in limited quantities in August 2023 with an SRP of $75 for a 700ml bottle.

A pleasant deep prune/fig note is followed by some caramel, dark chocolate, oakiness, char, mild wood smoke, dark cherry, and hints of brown sugar before some mild herbal notes, gentle black pepper, and standard rye spice emerge. The finish is effortless and long, with mildly dry prune and spice notes. Jack Daniels continues to impress me with their recent releases. I'm unsure if I've just been missing out or if they've genuinely been producing quality products. JD ryes, in particular, have captured my attention the most. It feels like a more approachable version of the single barrel barrel proof, which is still excellent. Well done.

AROMA - Vanilla, sweet butter, light and tropical, some mild caramel and dulce de leche. A faint staleness reminiscent of a Cuban cracker.
T ASTE - Not harsh initially, with a bit of bitter herb and buttery notes. Some gentle hints of cinnamon and vanilla. Faint oak and leather. Nothing stands out.
FINISH - Bitter oak and herb, with more of the soft vanilla that creates a buttery texture. Not much flavor lingers.

Opens up after resting for a bit. If this were a blind tasting, the balance and smoothness (reluctantly I say it) would never make me think of Jack Daniels. The nose is overpowering but has elements that draw you in, barrel char and caramel are prominent and carry to the palate. And there's no pine! If I see a bottle, I'm buying it.

Note: Sampled an ounce from a friend. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Rich, caramelly, with nice rye and a long smoky finish. Delicious.

It possesses a great flavor profile with notes of bananas, dark fruit, Christmas cake, molasses, mint, marshmallows, and dill, but the lower proof held it back. This would be as good as or better than the barrel proof rye and Coy Hill if it were at cask strength.
