Jack Daniel's Master Distiller Series No. 5

Another expression from Jack's Master Distiller's series, this one honoring Frank Bobo. It's part of a collection celebrating the six Master Distillers in Jack Daniel's history. Bottled at 43% ABV with caramel color added. The nose is very intriguing. It presents pancakes, maple syrup, bananas, vanilla, and brown sugar – the typical Jack Daniel's profile, executed very well. Banana ice cream and thick caramel are also noticeable. After the first taste, a very remarkable ashtray note emerged. The palate is somewhat straightforward. It offers prunes, caramel, and deep dark spices. Honey is present. It's quite enjoyable. The aftertaste is spicy and notably different from other Jack Daniel's expressions. Oak spice and Red Hot Cinnamon candies are detected. There's a slight sourness. In summary, this is an "enhanced" Jack Daniel's. Fans of the brand will likely appreciate it. I rate it 83 out of 100.

I found this in the discount section of the store near my parents' place for $19.95. I figured it couldn't be worse than the standard Jack Daniels, so why not. I can honestly say I wasn't let down. I found it less sweet and caramel-like than the standard Jack Daniels. Very smooth with a good mouthfeel, free of any burn or harshness. This is certainly not a complex Tennessee whiskey. Unlike the regular Jack Daniels, I could drink this straight. (I likely won't unless I have no other choice). It does work well in mixed drinks. I'm satisfied with the purchase. It's a good value at this price.

The nose is wonderfully dark fruit and vanilla with caramel, sweet and pungent, with a mild spice that gives way to the palate. Tasting is very similar with the distinct hard candy and barrel wood spice characteristic of Jack Daniels forward, vanilla again followed by a dry, oily, dark earth background. The finish is sweeter, and the Tennessee filtering reveals its notes here with some smoky tones as well. The finish isn't long, but some more perceived oils do prolong it compared to Old No. 7.

The aroma is delicate and creamy, with notes of banana custard, maple, vanilla, and cinnamon. The taste brings more cinnamon, plus oak, vanilla, crème brûlée, and cooked sugar. The finish is moderate and disappears rapidly, with banana custard and oak receding nicely.
