It possesses a strong yet peculiar flavor. The alcohol isn't overpowering, but it smells strongly of butter, minerals, and some spice. The taste is spicy with another odd flavor that I recognize from the aroma but can't quite identify. It leans sweet and tastes somewhat like prunes and cardboard. It offers more complexity than the Tatoosh bourbon concept, but it has this unpleasant, off-putting taste. I'd rather not sip it, and it would be an unusual choice for mixing. It's an interesting spirit due to its uniqueness, but it's not very good. There's clearly an issue with the grain. Unfortunately, while being strange, this isn't a novel kind of weirdness like Corsair Oatrage; it also doesn't taste good. I might use it for mixing, as there are some generally pleasant sweet notes, but the whole thing is a chaotic mess with some strangely unsatisfying undertones. This is one of the most off-putting spirits I've encountered. Excessive alcohol, too harsh, terrible balance, off flavors. A complete disaster.

Mark Nesheim established J.P. Trodden Distilling, naming it after his grandfather, a mailman during prohibition who delivered mail between the US and Canada, occasionally carrying spirits. J.P. Trodden himself was not a bootlegger but a person who appreciated spirits and shared them with friends during the dry era. Each batch is handcrafted using local grains sourced from a small farm in Quincy, Washington. This American spirit utilizes ingredients and equipment for its production that are all sourced from the US, specifically from Washington, Oregon, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

Tasting neat in a Glencairn glass: Nose provides rich wood spice, soft leather, and cinnamon. Palate features delicious vanilla and oak spice, with hints of orange and cherry. Finish is medium and smooth, with more grain wood and subtle cinnamon spice.
Grainy smell, somewhat like buttered popcorn, but tastes fruity. Possibly a stone fruit, like cherry. Medium body, very short finish.
Smoky aroma with some tart fruit as well. The palate is not very sweet. It feels incomplete. Lacking depth.
Sweet at first, then smoky with a lot of heat on the finish. Not a big fan. Slightly improved with a beer chaser.
Very noticeable brown sugar on the nose. Smooth finish with lingering notes of vanilla, caramel, and oak.
