4/13/22 purchased this in Marquette, MI for $69.99. I was quite disappointed to learn it was sourced. Conversely, this might be a positive. I sampled the 86 proof standard at a local establishment and wasn't overly impressed. This barrel proof expression is a different experience altogether... The nose resembles Mrs Butterworth’s pancake syrup. Notes of warm brown sugar and subtle honey. Caramel with minimal harsh ethanol. The taste is similar, but with less syrup; more classic bourbon characteristics. Caramel, vanilla, Swiss cake rolls? A faint nuttiness is present. The finish is understated. I'm surprised by the lack of impact from the proof. No heat. Notes of oak, faint popsicle stick, and more honey. A brief, pleasant finish. I don't regret the $70 spent, but I wouldn't repurchase it. I would have opted for the "Starlight bourbon finished in Maple" if available for $70-80, as it's superior overall and their own distillate.

About this bottle
This expression begins as a bourbon with a mash bill of corn, rye, and malted barley, matured in standard charred oak casks. It subsequently undergoes a finishing period in a whiskey cask previously holding maple syrup. The spirit is bottled at cask strength, with proofs varying by batch but generally between 112-116.

MEGA-BEV GRAND RAPIDS MICHIGAN SINGLE BARREL PICK Amazing! A delightful surprise for me. Nose: Smells like caramelized maple. The alcohol burn is noticeable. Palate: Starts with a burn, then silky burnt caramel and raisins. It fades to a light maple cinnamon. Followed by a really pleasant tingling sensation. VERY happy with this.
Don't get confused. This isn't a "maple" flavored bourbon. It's a little sweet but has a full bourbon flavor. I enjoy the standard maple barrel finish, but the cask strength version truly elevates it. I love it.
Decent taste, a little harsh.
Smooth and sweet.
