I.W. Harper 12 Year Bourbon

This bourbon has a strong char flavor. It seems more mature for a bourbon. This lower proof is acceptable to me because I feel the water enhances the sweetness that would otherwise be lost. At one hundred proof, this would be a very heavy, burnt, earthy tasting bourbon. So perhaps the reduced proof is its saving grace? I like it, but it's not a favorite. I do appreciate the long finish and the lingering, full mouthful of flavor. I would not purchase it again.

A remarkably smooth bourbon, with abundant caramel and banana on the nose and palate, accompanied by some tart dried plums. This one is easy to drink. Not exceptional, but a decent dram. Butterscotch is also detectable on the palate. The container itself is quite attractive, resembling a perfume bottle. Overall rating: 80/100.

Initially tried neat, then added water. Nose: Exhibited caramel and butterscotch. First sip: Sharp and burning, even at 43% ABV. Middle and lingering taste: Similar to the nose, finishing with pepper. After dilution: Taste: Revealed banana notes. It's an acceptable drink, but not one I'd buy a bottle of.

Sampled a bottle from the sixties/seventies. Scent: Quite potent like new make spirit, yet balanced. Fragrant. Sweetness of honey. Floral notes. Taste: Honey, fluffy marshmallows, a hint of oak, nutty undertones. Finish: A sting of alcohol, fragrant floral notes, medium duration. Wouldn't want another, even if it were free.

I used to purchase this at duty-free in Tokyo, unaware it was unavailable in North America. A pleasing, well-balanced bourbon. It is indeed floral, as others have noted. It's nice to see it becoming available closer to home again.

A distinct fragrance - seriously, the aroma is so floral, my first thought was to tuck it behind my ear. It's fantastic if you appreciate floral notes. The taste matches; the impression is 'roses!' throughout.
