Barbara Chacon 4.0

Husk Farm Distillery, October 26th 2024, Gin #2 I'm revisiting a gin I've sampled multiple times over the past five years. My past notes indicate the flavor profile remains consistent, which surprised me given I initially rated it 83/100. I've now elevated that score, as this is certainly among the superior local gins and deserves a matching rating. "Very Good": 85/100 (4 stars) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Original review from 2018: Nose: Sweet, citrus (sherbet lemon, lime, grapefruit), and slightly floral (lavender). A bold and direct aroma with juniper in the background. Palate: Sweet and vibrant, with peppery spice, aniseed, licorice, cardamom, cinnamon, and lemon and orange zest. There's a faint anesthetic quality to the taste. Finish: Sweet citrus, smooth and mild. A herbal licorice note is present. The most striking initial feature is its deep purple-blue color. This isn't from artificial coloring but from steeping Butterfly Pea petals in the spirit post-distillation. This plant, known as 'bunga telang' in Southeast Asia, is used for food coloring in traditional dishes and beverages. Interestingly, adding carbonated or acidic water changes the spirit from an opaque purple-blue to a delicate and attractive transparent pink. It would be easy to dismiss the use of this plant as a gimmick and view this gin as merely a novelty, except for one crucial fact – it's a good gin. The flavor emphasizes citrus and sweet components over juniper, making it very refreshing and cooling. It's one of the few gins I enjoy drinking straight or on ice, and it also produces a very pleasant gin and tonic.

Colten Valdovinos 4.3

A really lovely floral Gin, enjoyable either neat or with tonic water. It changes color depending on the mixer used.
