Hirsch Small Batch High-Rye Straight Bourbon 8 Year

This one is somewhat gentle. Rye is apparent, but it doesn't seem like it spent 8 years maturing. It's fairly sweet with some tartness. The rye's heat is restrained, like a well-behaved pet. Cinnamon offers pleasant sweetness without being too intense. A hint of fruit is present. This is similar to an improved Bulleit Rye. Woody bitterness is subtle, not very noticeable. It lacks significant depth and has some unusual notes. Spices are prominent, but not excessively strong. The aroma is dry and full, though not particularly unique. The taste is full and bitter, featuring woodiness and substantial spice. Fruit emerges later, with a cherry note that becomes fresher over time. Significant tannin is present, contributing pleasant leather and toasted almond characteristics. A small amount of brown sugar is detected. It's enjoyable; after the initial bitter impact, the flavors harmonize. Cherry becomes more distinct but never overpowering. While not as intricate as Eagle Rare, it possesses good depth. The spice is robust but manageable. It grows more satisfyingly indulgent, yet never reaches an exceptional degree of indulgence or complexity, despite its pleasing flavors and equilibrium. Vanilla is abundant but not excessive. Unexpectedly, the vanilla doesn't make it overly floral given the high rye content and dry profile. Floral notes are present with the fruit, but they are controlled. As it evolves, the fruit takes on a bitter orange peel quality and mellows, as does the almond. Tart rye and spicy bitterness begin to lead, which is a letdown, but it remains good. The vanilla adds a nice sweetness without overwhelming harshness. There's some mild fruitiness.

An exciting discovery. Reflecting on my bourbon and whiskey statistics, this fits many criteria: considerable age, elevated rye content, adequate proof, good color, and a reasonable price. While this summary lacks immediate excitement, it stands out against a backdrop of many mediocre and disappointing choices, appearing distinct and superior. The aroma presents pleasant notes of spiced rye, vanilla, and caramel, all supported by a vibrant, fruity base. I even detect hints of banana, possibly coated in sugar. Upon tasting, the fruity and banana-like aroma from the nose reappears, accompanied by a sugary, mixed-fruit salad character. I had concerns about the body due to the proof, but frankly, a higher proof wouldn't significantly enhance the flavor. However, the vanilla and caramel notes detected in the aroma are absent here. The finish coats the mouth but is ultimately unsatisfying. The high rye content is evident, yet the lack of potent rye spice or sweet corn makes me question the character of a younger version of this distillate and its potential suitability. Whether it was genuine enthusiasm or dissatisfaction with a $50 purchase that proved somewhat disappointing, the initial sips were very promising. However, with continued tasting, I find it leans towards a cocktail bourbon. This would be acceptable if I didn't already possess a surplus of unremarkable spirits suitable for that purpose. Nevertheless, there's an intriguing quality that warrants a future re-evaluation.

This is a very interesting pour. Honestly, I'm finding it quite difficult to identify specific tasting notes. Vanilla and some spice seem most prominent. A touch of caramel on the taste and a rather short finish. It's good, but a bit thin for an 8-year-old. No real complaints, but nothing particularly stands out. I wouldn't turn it down, but it doesn't compel me to seek it out. A very subtle, balanced pour.

Nose - Abundant baking spices Body - Cinnamon and rye spice are very noticeable but not too much Finish - Smooth finish with more baking spices and just a whisper of pickle brine (not excessive this time) This has a powerful rye presence, but I enjoy it. It has a very pleasant, smooth finish.

Nose: Dill pickle, cinnamon candies, licorice, cola, vibrant ginger, a hint of black pepper, and a berry element. Palate: Mild spices, possesses a juicy, somewhat velvety texture. A hint of oak, licorice, cherry with the slightest trace of Dill that persists for a while.

This is a nice bourbon. It has a pleasant rye kick but is very drinkable neat. Rye, vanilla, butterscotch. No strong burn but plenty of spice. I bought a couple of bottles in OR for $30 each. Lucky me, at that price it's a great value.
