The name OMG in High West Silver Whiskey OMG Rye refers to Old MononGahela, a rye named after a river in western Pennsylvania. This name is a corruption of the Native American word Mechmenawungihilla, meaning "falling banks." This region was central to whiskey production in the 1800s, primarily using local rye, until various factors significantly reduced output by the 20th century. High West has revived this rye strain, and this unaged expression uses 80% rye and 20% malted rye, with other batches aging in barrels for future releases.

This is my initial experience with unaged rye, and it's quite intriguing. It's light and sharp, clearly missing the caramel notes that come from aging. The flavor isn't entirely unpleasant; it resembles fermented raw grain, which is what it is. However, the high alcohol content is overwhelming, completely masking a more delicate flavor profile with pure alcohol. It's not sold in Ontario.
An unexpected and delightful discovery! Primarily oats with a touch of barley. It goes down like silk, yet carries a subtle Cheerio essence. Quite unusual, right? It's a bit outside my usual choices, but a worthwhile detour from the usual brown spirits.
Just finished making a Manhattan with Cocchi di Torino and this whiskey; I'm really impressed. I love the juiciness I'm getting from it. I still think my Woodford Rye is better, but this is an enjoyable rye regardless.
Terrible stuff, both in aroma and flavor. Unacceptable neat, with water, or in a cocktail. After a few sips, I poured the rest away. The most disappointing bottle I've ever encountered. I want my money back!
High West, our relationship has peaked. I'm unsure what I consumed, but it should not be bottled. Rye Guy...disappointing...
