High Plains Rye Whiskey

My rating is quite similar to the previous review; I dropped it a quarter star. I really enjoy this rye as it offers a bit more complexity, especially for a $50 price point compared to similar ryes. The dominant note I detected today on the nose was black tea, which isn't surprising as I get this from other ryes from the same producer, like Cream of Kentucky. It's definitely not as robust as the Cream of Kentucky rye, but still offers light cedar notes alongside that black tea. The finish isn't particularly impressive and isn't spicy for a rye; however, what draws me back to this is the variation in notes from glass to glass and the complexity it offers at its price point. As it's a less traditional rye, a bourbon drinker might enjoy it.

It’s December 3, and I plan to try a new rye whiskey daily this month. While my rye expertise isn't as underdeveloped as my Scotch knowledge was last year, I'm always open to recommendations for good rye whiskies. With objectives set (it's good to have goals), there are some key spirits I could use your assistance in locating. Objectives (abbreviated): 5 ryes. 4 stars. Easily found. (0/5) I want to discern the difference between bourbon and rye. First attempt. One of these must be an Empire Rye. I desire a bold rye. I want the one that tastes like dill relish served from a pirate's boot, reminiscent of Ariel's human belongings collection. All while submerged underwater. >>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Extremely pleasant aroma… more akin to bourbon than rye. Very sweet with some rye spice present. On the palate, the rye truly comes through, drinking like a very well-balanced rye, and the alcohol content is perfectly suited, providing a nice warming sensation on the finish without being overpowering.

Aroma: Oak, Vanilla, not strongly indicative of a Rye Palate: Thick, Rye Bread, Pepper, Syrup, Dill, Black Licorice Finish: Quick, Sweet with some Oak Overall: An excellent Rye blend, with an interesting contrast between the nose and palate. Worth the $50 cost.

Vanilla rye spice on the nose. Plum, sweet corn, licorice, rye dill, medium length dry finish. Perhaps a hint of chocolate in the finish?

Floral scents and spice in the aroma. A little waxy at first, then a good spicy character with a strong rye presence.
