About this bottle

Hakata Whisky is produced and aged at the Hikari Distillery, established in 1912 in Fukuoka, Japan. This whisky is crafted from 100% barley, with a portion of it fermented using koji, a type of mold commonly utilized in shochu production. Maturation took place in sherry casks, with some barrels stored in conventional warehouses. A select few casks, however, were matured in open-air facilities where temperatures varied significantly, ranging from 95°F in summer to 38°F in winter. Hakata 10 Year became accessible in the United States in February 2023, priced at $79.99 MSRP.

Oliver Hook 4.3

Smell: Sugary raisins, dark apple liquid, goji berries Flavor: A little meaty sweet, intense raisins, mild warmth/prickle, goji berries, acai, close to sweet soy sauce Aftertaste: Faint metallic, sweet savory impression, reduced mirin & soy, dark raisins Score - 87/100 Final Thoughts - The low proof of 42% initially made me hesitant and unsure if it impacted the smell, but it doesn't really show much. The aroma is primarily sweet, slightly savory, but not much beyond this sweet impression. However, upon tasting, the lower proof is surprising given the substantial flavor. It's quite potent with this mostly sweet, lightly savory, tiny bit metallic/medicinal character. It's enjoyable, yet feels somewhat unbalanced with occasional metallic notes. Would I drink it if offered? - Yes Would I specifically order it? - Perhaps Would I buy a bottle? - No NOTE - All reviews are done without factoring in price.

Aroma: Both fruity and floral. Body: Begins somewhat dull but then awakens with plum, honey, and a citrus flavor like tropical fruit... perhaps apricot? Finish: This is its strong point. Plum and honey. I'm very fond of this. It starts a bit bland but becomes quite engaging.

Cohen Machado 3.5

Nose - bright and fruity Body - pit fruit and sugar giving way to black pepper Finish - short and clean with plum and black pepper notes

Plenty of cherry, plum, and sherry. Enjoyable and very different from Islay alternatives. Perfect for sipping on an island evening.
