Glenns Creek ¡Cuervito Vivo!

The distillery is situated in the historic Old Crow facility in Kentucky, where efforts are underway to restore it to its former glory. Following the distillery's acquisition, a former supervisor recreated the original mashbill until a satisfactory flavor profile was achieved. This was then aged for at least 26 months before being released as single barrel offerings. My particular barrel was #14, bottled at 51.2%. The initial aroma presents a blend of damp pine needles, butterscotch pudding, and earthy barnyard notes, followed by dark chocolate-covered espresso beans, rosemary, and honeysuckle. It then transitions to tangerine oranges, caramelized peaches, and maraschino cherries, concluding with toasted caraway seeds and subtle oak spices, accompanied by a moderate alcohol sting. The taste begins with a medium body, mirroring the aroma's notes of damp pine needles, butterscotch pudding, and earthy barnyard. This is followed by a moderately bitter and sour spice that gradually yields to dark chocolate mocha, rosemary, and honeycomb. It then shifts to tangerine oranges, caramelized peaches, and tart cherries, finishing with toasted caraway seeds and mild oak spices, with a noticeable alcohol burn. The finish is of medium duration, featuring notes of toasted coconut, dark chocolate-covered espresso beans, caramelized peaches, butterscotch pudding, spearmint, cloves, and delicate oak spice. For a bourbon barely over two years old, it has developed remarkably well, showcasing a distinctive earthy forest character upfront, balanced by creamy butterscotch and a dusty oak presence. A slight youthful tartness detracts from the overall experience, but with further aging, I anticipate these youthful flaws will diminish, revealing the exceptional craftsmanship from the distillery. Unfortunately, these are currently only available in Kentucky. However, if you find yourself in the area, a visit to their distillery is highly recommended. It offers a unique, unpretentious bourbon experience with an engaging and well-informed team producing high-quality spirits.
