About this bottle
Glenmorangie Bacalta, meaning "baked" in Scottish Gaelic, was introduced in early 2017 as the eighth installment in the brand's Private Edition series. Master Distiller Bill Lumsden sought to enhance a previous expression, the discontinued Madeira Wood Finish. He collaborated with a winery to produce a unique Malmsey Madeira wine exclusively for seasoning toasted American oak hogsheads. After two years of sun exposure, these hogsheads were filled with single malt that had matured for 10 years in ex-bourbon barrels. The whisky finished for another two years in these Madeira casks before being bottled at 46% ABV, without chill-filtration.

Nose: Sweet and floral, with cherry syrup. Sweet.
Palate: Probably the fruitiest I've ever tried. It feels like licking the bottom of a strawberry dessert bowl. Red fruits, sweet, then a woody touch, walnuts, a dry quality, and the alcohol is noticeable (46% is perfect!). Something floral, something fresh.
Finish: Woody and fresh. Cinnamon? No, more like a minty pepper and sugar.
Overall: A big wow! Very enjoyable. A series of flavors unfold. Complex. The best fruity whisky I've had so far. 97%

NOSE
Dried fruit, Honey Nut Cheerios, white peaches, milk chocolate-covered graham crackers with malt, and hints of vanilla pudding and butterscotch.
It's decadent and rich, with sweetness appearing in stages.
PALATE
Dried fruit, baked honeycomb, white peaches, milk chocolate-covered graham crackers with malt, and hints of vanilla pudding and butterscotch, plus a touch of candied fig.
This is almost identical to the aroma, but with more depth and complexity.
FINISH
Medium to Long, with dried fruit, banana pudding, malt, butterscotch, and a slightly spicy fade.

I received this as part of a blind tasting. My observations:
Color is amber (0.7). The nose has fruit and Speyside sweetness, with hints of green apple and floral notes, plus a touch of malt. It resembles Glenlivet but isn't, as it has no coloring. The palate has spice and pepper, but also some sweetness and fruit. Is there a very faint hint of smoke? The finish is medium, rated B-. After trying Johnnie Walker Green, I no longer detect any smoke, and this isn't as good as Green.

Honey mead is the main flavor, followed by dessert wine, melon, candied fruits, caramel, butterscotch, vanilla, maple syrup, brandy, cream soda, candle wax, and Mexican candy chili powder. It is extremely decadent; if you don't like sweet drinks, skip this one. I, for one, am in love and will savor every drop. Possibly the best Scottish whisky I have ever tasted.

Dense and fruity. The wine's viscosity is noticeable, and the oils contribute to the lingering finish. I would liken it to other wine-finished Glenmorangies in terms of richness, oiliness, and fruitiness. The red fruit coats the tongue, but it lacks the balance of earthiness, malt, and fruit found in others like the Companta or Tayne.
