Lavern Bethea 3.3

The first Glenfiddich expression themed around sherry cask influence, this bottling utilizes the less common Amontillado sherry cask, rather than the familiar Oloroso. It's possible the name was simplified to 'Angel Sherry' due to the pronunciation of Amontillado. This whisky first matured in American bourbon barrels before a finish in Amontillado sherry casks, a full Amontillado maturation is rare. The packaging and bottle design feel festive, suitable for Lunar New Year, with a charming metal 'Angel Sherry' charm. Priced accessibly at $1040 NTD for 700ml, with retail prices often between $749-$880 NTD, it's quite close to the standard 12-year-old, and being a Taiwan limited edition, it caters to the local preference for sweetness. This presents a significant challenge to other sherry-cask whiskies in the $800-$1000 NTD range. Let's taste this highly recommended red Angel Sherry cask. Region: Speyside, Scotland Cask: Ex-bourbon, finished in Amontillado sherry ABV: 43% Color: Pale reddish amber Price: $1040 NTD / 700ml Opened: Recently Nose: Notes of apple, sweet honey, floral hints, underlying toffee, and a savory wood aroma. It presents as a fruity, honeyed cake with minimal alcohol presence. The aroma profile is rich in fruit, floral, and dessert notes, with very low alcohol, making it an excellent choice for beginners exploring aromas. Palate: Initial entry offers a touch of woody astringency and a slight alcohol prickle, followed by woody spice and other spices. Mid-palate reveals a salty-sweet maltiness, a hint of bitterness, and honey sweetness. The finish brings notes of raisin, light wood, a moderately sweet dark chocolate (around 50% cocoa), and a relatively short finish. The taste upon entry and in the mouth is characterized by sweet molasses and wood, with dried fruit and chocolate emerging after swallowing. The whisky's lighter body contributes to a shorter finish; however, pouring a larger measure or taking more sips can extend the experience. A sip of iced water after finishing can also reawaken the dried fruit notes. Overall: Compared to the commonly encountered Oloroso sherry-matured whiskies, this Angel Sherry is a delightful treat, exceptionally sweet. It lacks any sulfurous notes and showcases considerable effort in its texture. It's highly recommended for those who enjoy sweet and refreshing flavors or as an introductory sherry cask whisky for newcomers. Its price and flavor profile make it very competitive, possessing the caliber of a top-tier, lighter-style sherry cask whisky.

A bright acidity and spice lead the way. As it progresses, it becomes very malty. There's a subtle sweetness of bread and watermelon.
