Glenfarclas 15 Year

Thinking about my grandmother today, who passed two years ago. She'd take a tiny bit of schnapps and say with a smile, 'What, are you trying to get me drunk?'. It makes me happy to know this bottling is at the strength my grandfather preferred. Grandparents are special. The initial smell is a wonderful mix of apricot, butterscotch, and chocolate, followed by orange marmalade, sherry, and oak. The aroma is luxurious. This single malt is rich, oily, and a medium gold color that nicely complements the distinctive yellow label. A gentle sherried sweetness combines with white pepper, creating a shiver. A mild tannic transition leads to a moderate, relatively mellow finish with cocoa nibs, walnuts, and oak. The scent is like a perfume I'd gladly use. I wish the flavor had more of that aromatic substance. While I'd happily drink this, it's hard not to miss the excellence of the 21 year old. 7.5/10

My whisky journey has spanned several years, and I've sampled numerous expressions from various distilleries; my failure to taste a Glenfarclas 15yo until now is quite embarrassing. A genuine Speyside classic, Glenfarclas occupies a similar standing to other renowned single malts from the same Scottish region. Naturally, I anticipated the traditional tasting and aroma characteristics from this distillery. Bottled at 46% ABV, this is a sherry-matured whisky. On the nose, I detected prunes, the characteristic Glenfarclas apple note, and cooked pineapple. Quite pleasant. On the palate, the initial sensation was sugar, cider, and that unmistakable apple profile that defines Glenfarclas. The aftertaste is dominated by milk and sugar notes with delightful red apples. Overall, this is precisely what one expects from a core range Glenfarclas. Nothing extraordinary, but a well-crafted, standard Speyside dram. It will be enjoyable 100% of the time and can serve as an everyday single malt. My scoring system assigns it 80 out of 100, which I believe is an accurate assessment for a classic.

I sampled Glenfarclas 12, 15, 17, 21, and 25 alongside the 105 NAS. I own bottles of the 12, 17, and 105 NAS, and I got samples of the others to see if I was missing out. My impression is that I wasn't missing much. It appears Glenfarclas production is at its peak around 17-18 years old. I suspect that any truly exceptional older barrels are reserved for single cask releases. This 15-year-old isn't cheap, and it's not as complex or tasty as the 17-year-old. There's nothing wrong with this expression, but nothing about it truly stands out. It makes me question the original score. I believe that score, like many others, was likely based on a much older release when the quality was significantly higher. It's certainly not bad, but I'd suggest opting for the 17-year-old or 105 NAS instead.

Actually a Speyside, not a Highland. Distilleries' stills tend to confuse us, and some view the Speyside region as a sub-region of Highland. This malt still surprised me. It's precisely at 46% ABV, which is special (most are 46.3% for instance). This also means it's non-chill filtered, and we appreciate that. It's actually the only one that is non-chill filtered from the Glenfarclas range. It also has a natural color. I chilled the malt for a while, and some nice scotch mist appeared, which, in my opinion, led to a better quality presentation. Nose: Creamy, very malt-forward, dried fruits, mild nuttiness mixed with dark spices (like cardamom, clove, and cinnamon) and some mocha notes. Taste: Lots of dried fruits, plum, even a little minty. Conclusion: A nice, approachable, and easy-drinking single malt.

Nose: Light cream sherry, herbal notes, undertones of overripe fruit and butter. Palate: Sherry, fruitcake, citrus zest, walnut, dark dried fruits. Finish: Moderately long. More sherry, dried fruit, orange peel, dates, walnuts, and almonds. The lingering taste has a pleasant tartness. For many years, Glenfarclas 15 has been a staple choice. In my view, this is the standout of the standard offerings (though perhaps tied with the 25). It's an easily drinkable 46% and requires no water. A strongly Oloroso sherry-matured, slightly herbal, nutty dram. My only, fairly minor, points of criticism are that it's a bit thin on the palate and, while it shows some complexity in the finish, it's rather one-dimensional on the nose and palate. However, that's really just being overly critical - this is a very enjoyable small measure.

A very nice lightly sherried whisky that performs well across the board and isn't excessively sweet. It evokes a summery feel, though perhaps late summer / early fall, as it gives off ripe apple orchard vibes. It's very easy to sip without requiring much thought. While not the most intricate whisky, it's simply a pleasant one to enjoy.
