Glendronach single cask 1994 (cask 1376)

$50 for an ounce at Jack Rose I tasted this alongside a 25-year-old 1993 Glendronach that was aged in an unspecified sherry butt. In the end, it was difficult to determine which was superior. The 1993 transformed from a rather unpleasant whisky into a delicious dark sherry masterpiece with a bit of water and time. This 1994 did not change much with water or time. It remained a rich delight. I sampled PX sherry in Spain. It's similar to ice wine in Canada in that if you appear to be a tourist and order it, the bartender will ask, "Are you sure? It's very sweet." And they are right to offer warnings because both can be nearly undrinkable. However, whiskies that spend a considerable amount of time in PX sherry casks are always exceptional. The malt somehow perfectly complements the sweetness. Single malts aged exclusively in PX sherry casks are uncommon, but they are delicious. Be cautious of those that are only finished in PX, though, as these often have poor quality and the PX is used to mask imperfections. This whisky is a candied delight. Marmalade that would drive Paddington wild. Concord grape jam. Guava. Blackberries. Violets and roses. I almost feel like spreading this on toast with peanut butter.
