GlenAllachie 8 Year

During my third trip to Scotland, I finally reached one of the premier distilleries in Speyside, overseen and owned by the renowned Billy Walker. The GlenAllachie, translating to "Valley of The Rocks" in Gaelic, is a visually appealing location where highly sherried Speyside whiskies are produced. I suspect most folks appreciate their 10yo Cask Strength and the nearly purple 12yo. Now, it's time to sample one of their younger offerings: The 8 year old. Presented at 46% ABV. The aroma resembles breakfast: Honey, granola, macadamia nuts, hay, pecans. It has a grassy quality. Following an initial taste, a note of aged orange peel emerges. The palate offers three distinct flavors, all well-executed and enjoyable. Old raisins, fruit and spice, and honeycomb are present. The finish reveals some youthful character, but the craftsmanship effectively conceals it behind pleasing notes of hay and tobacco leaf. It's dry. Overall, for an 8-year-old, this is excellent. The 46% ABV contributes to a great experience for the drinker, though it was a gamble for such a young spirit. Fortunately, the casks chosen appear to be exceptional, a testament to Billy Walker's expertise. Fully recommended, I rate it 88 out of 100.

Oloroso, Pedro Ximenez, virgin and wine. Light natural caramel. Cinnamon, white grapes, peach, some coffee, lemon. Woody. Then white chocolate. On the palate, smooth, light, citrusy, slight orange, chocolatey. Short but intense finish. Complex considering the price.

Light copper color. Peach, white chocolate, orange peel, and toasted almond on the nose. Alcoholic but mature on the palate, with raisin compote, white grape, and white pepper. Full body. Dry, with a long finish.

The nose has a Rioja wine character, sweet and slightly perfumed. It's surprisingly smooth on the palate despite being 46% ABV and only 8 years old. It's enjoyable with the combination of cask influences, maybe a few too many different casks but it's solid. A nice spicy note.

On the nose, it's dry, woody, chocolatey, with light smoke. On the palate, it's dry, with a tingle. Well-caramelized body. Short finish. Simple but good.

Pleasant texture, sweet and buttery with a hint of caramel. Relaxing to drink slowly.
