GlenAllachie 12 Year Old Chinquapin (US) Oak

(Good Spirits Co. Glasgow – Virtual Whisky Tasting, May 7, 2021). Chinquapin oak from Missouri. The spirit spent most of its life in American bourbon barrels, with an 18-month finishing period in a virgin American Chinquapin oak cask. The casks were air-dried for 48 months before use. (I have reused my tasting notes from the last tasting; I took notes during the tasting, and they were nearly identical!) Nose: Honey, orange, herbal Palate: Heather honey, buttery mouthfeel, barley sugar, spices (cumin, green spices), black pepper Finish: Floral, black pepper, baked biscuits Like the rest of the virgin oak range, you can detect the distillery's signature note of honey and a little spice. A good, well-crafted dram with genuine depth and layers of flavor. It tied for last place out of the six drams, with 0% of the final vote for favorite of the night. 86% of those present said they enjoyed the whiskey.

A good, well-made dram with some real depth and layers of flavor.

Youthful and bright, showing expected traits from oak. Unsure about specific oak types compared to European oak, but it's a decent pour. Offers fruit, some spice, and plenty of floral notes. Lacks expected vanilla or citrus. The texture is vibrant and lively. Sweet berry flavors emerge, followed by spicy wood reminiscent of fresh cuts, and subtle caramel. Becomes quite malty and sweet later on. Pleasant and intriguing, though not thrilling, with a youthful, sharp alcoholic bite.

A floral honey on a greener, less spicy wood than the French Oak, with more noticeable alcohol in the finish. It's a straightforward but effective whiskey, with some sweet spices like nutmeg in the finish.
