GlenAllachie 10 Year Port Wood Finish

I acquired the three recent finishing cask bottlings from Glenallachie: Koval Rye 8yo, PX cask 12yo, and this 10yo which was finished in Port Wood casks. The cost was $54 prior to global shipping issues and tariffs. Given the contents, I consider that a fair price. It's presented at 48% ABV, likely with no added color and without chill filtration. It appears slick, amber/orange, and quite oily in the Glencairn. Numerous small droplets and very thin legs trail down the glass after a vigorous swirl, common for higher ABV spirits. This is a positive. The initial aroma was mainly oak barrel and young spirit, with some vanilla and pepper, but minimal port wine influence. Adding water was necessary to reveal notes of raisins and grapes on the nose. The taste presented a pleasant, warming sweetness with subtle hints of port and vanilla. The texture felt a bit rougher than anticipated, and the whisky's rawness is apparent. Water seemed to diminish the already scarce flavors; while it helped the aroma open up, it did not improve the taste or the finish. Regarding the finish, it's of medium length, warm, with lingering wood notes and a somewhat disappointing sugary quality. In summary, my enjoyment of this bottle decreased over time. The flavors seemed to become less pronounced and more distant. It was considerably more vibrant during the initial third of consumption. The Koval Rye variant was my favorite of the trio, with this bottling being the least preferred. The price is acceptable, and it remains a drinkable whisky, but I favor the other two. I'd rate this between 3 and 3.25 stars. Cheers.

Aroma: Sweet candied red berries, toffee, a hint of leather, and dark chocolate. Taste: Sweet red berries, toffee, a gentle ginger spice/heat, and syrupy apple juice. Finish: A lingering ginger spicy heat, lightly bitter red berry sweetness, and light tannic leather. Score: 88/100 Concluding Remarks: This was quite an intriguing spirit. The port influence I detect presents as a very fresh red berry character, which doesn't quite align with the ports I've sampled, but it's quite pleasant. I truly enjoy the sweet, candied red berry profile I get from this. The flavors are well-balanced; nothing stands out dramatically, but it's a solid overall drink. Would I consume it if offered? - Yes Would I specifically request it? - Yes Would I purchase a bottle? - Yes, if priced around $50 USD

Quick hit review #5: My expectations were high for this distiller, but this dram was my least preferred from a lineup that didn't impress me overall. It felt very unrefined and disconnected. I am shocked it was released. It's like observing a top coach excel with a team, then move on and lose their touch. They once said another like this distillery would never be made in their lifetime, and they were correct!

A well-balanced spirit, quite potent, with abundant red fruits and dark chocolate. The finish was good and medium in length, with dark chocolate reappearing.

This one was very potent. I didn't enjoy it as much. It required the addition of water.

My top choice among the GA wood finish range. A nice selection of a Port cask.
