Glen Scotia 1832 Campbeltown

This might be the finest Scotch available globally. My preference is for Scotch with peat, smoke, and a mellow profile. Typically, I keep Laphroaig on hand, with the Quarter Cask and Cask Strength versions being my preferred choices. A chance encounter with Glen Scotia 'Cainbel' 1832 at an airport shop introduced me to it, and I've been captivated since. It's a distinctive spirit. Its initial flavor doesn't immediately impress, but the exceptionally long, smooth, and compelling finish is remarkable. It truly embodies the act of appreciating a fine Scotch. Curiously, the 16-year-old expression lacks the same smoothness, as does the Double Cask. They are pleasant, but the 'Cainbel' 1832 stands in a category of its own.

Campbeltown... A region known for its abundance of excellent whisky. Glen Scotia, however, is often overlooked, and deservedly so, as competing with Springbank is a tall order. But enough about that... This bottling is delightful! It has notes of butterscotch, malted barley, honey, and salt. Quite straightforward, wouldn't you agree? There's some bitterness at the end, and the aroma is superior to the taste. Still... fantastic stuff!

Another fantastic Glen Scotia! I sampled this at a friend's place after their journey to Egypt. They acquired this bottle at the London airport on their return. The aroma is softer, but the palate delivers an amazing rush of tastes. So much to explore: caramel, vanilla, leather, burnt oak, a mild saltiness… a flavor explosion. Really good! Eager to have another sip!

It's described as “rich and gently smoky”, and I believe that's a very accurate and fitting characterization. Oak was prominent initially, but after a bit of ice, the sherry became more noticeable. It reminded me of Glenmorangie 18 but with a very subtle peaty note. Purchased at Heathrow Duty Free. £52 for one bottle, £90 for two. All prices are for 1L bottles.

Given the price, I never would have guessed its quality. This must be my new favorite non-age-statement bottling. The sherry and smoke are well-balanced.

Perhaps the bottle improved since I first tried it. It's a very balanced whisky. Slightly sweet and savory on the finish from the sherry. Excellent for sharing, and a good pick for those who like minimal peat.
