Glen Ord 30 year old

A 2005 Diageo special release, limited to 6000 bottles. I received an ounce from a friend for tasting neat. Nose: Honey, sherry, a light malty scent, candle wax, and toasted hazelnut. Later, a salty sea breeze emerged, with a touch of ethanol and citrus fruit appearing eventually. Body: Full, it erupts on the palate, bringing the nose to life in three dimensions. Palate: Initially, there's a lot happening. Smoky, caramelized hazelnut with sherry and honey on top. The flavor truly matches the nose and is excellent. There's no heat whatsoever. A hint of light white pepper appears at the start but is so mild and fleeting you might miss it. If I had to summarize, I'd say sweet caramel and smoke. Finish: Long, smoky, and malty, lingering indefinitely. This is the perfect finish. The taste mirrors the nose and is wonderful. The smoky finish is terrific. Note: I won some bourbon at an auction and received some fun 1-ounce samples as a surprise. I was looking forward to this. I had no expectations. One sip and I knew it was really good. From the nose, you have no idea how long the finish will linger; it simply never ends.
