Glen Moray 21 Year Portwood Finish

Nose: flowers, caramel, blackcurrant, blackberries, a hint of plums and cinnamon. Pleasant and subtle. Palate: very sweet: lots of caramel, fruitcake, milk chocolate, raisins, light licorice. I'd say it's good and complex: it's genuinely hard to identify distinct aromas; everything is blended very well. What's for sure is that caramel is the main flavor, and perhaps too much so: did they overdo it?? The Port, however, isn't clearly noticeable. In the final part of the palate, I detect a wine-like note that, however, reminds me more of Marsala wine. The finishing in port barrels likely served primarily to add roundness and blend everything together, even though there's a watery sensation I wouldn't have anticipated; it doesn't have the oily, dense consistency I would have hoped for. Still, it's a very smooth whisky indeed. Finish is medium-long, consistently caramel. Expectations were very high, but they were only partially met. It took me the entire bottle to assess this whisky, and I must say I started with a score of 4.75, later reducing it to 4.25: initially excellent, but as I continued, I concluded that... there's too much caramel.... What is certain is that caramel is predominant, and perhaps excessive: did they overdo it?? The Port, however, is not distinctly perceived; in the last phase of the palate, I notice a wine-like note that, however, reminds me more of Marsala wine. The finish in port barrels will have served more than anything else to give roundness and blend to the whole, even if there's a sensation of wateriness that I wouldn't have expected; it's not an oily and dense consistency as I would have hoped. However, it is a really velvety whisky. Medium-long finish, always caramel. Expectations were very high, but they were partly disappointed. It took me the whole bottle to evaluate this whisky, I must say starting from a score of 4.75 then reduced to 4.25: initially excellent, then continuing to conclude that.... there is too much caramel.... Very smooth. I had not tried Glen Moray before and was impressed. Rich, sweet, and flavorful. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
