Glen Garioch 8 Year (Old Particular)

Smell and taste observations: Upon initial pour, the aroma is reminiscent of Riesling, with an excessive sweetness and the musty scent of wilted flowers. Unwatered, the taste is zesty but not intensely burning. The taste profile mostly echoes the aroma, though the sweetness is moderated enough to maintain flavor harmony. Candied sugars, honeysuckle nectar, and raw bell peppers are all present. The alcohol content lends a lengthy and arid conclusion. Discovering the ideal water addition for this spirit presents a puzzle, but the optimal point bursts with fruit, woody spice, and a sulfurous aroma. This was a wonderful discovery for $37, and an excellent illustration of a youthful, spirit-forward whiskey.

This single malt, single cask, uncolored, non-chill-filtered spirit is bottled at cask strength from a refill hogshead. Only 290 bottles were produced. If you were fortunate enough to get one, you know what a gem you found. I personally needed a lot of water to tame the cask strength and youthful heat, but what incredible aromas and flavors in an 8-year-old spirit. Smoky, malty, peaty, seashore, sweet, and savory on the nose. Thick, coating palate with buttery cream, vanilla custard, and sweet tea. Sweet and spicy medium finish.
