Glasgow 1770 Triple Distilled Release No.1

Smell: Green apple, barley sugar, gooseberries, a touch of vanilla, and light balsa wood sawdust. The aroma has a strong spirited quality. Taste: A spicy, somewhat intense initial flavor – cereal and barley sugar with hot cinnamon and a little chili. Some orchard fruit on the mid-palate but little else. The texture is neutral. Finish: Medium/short. Not much beyond a sharp, persistent hot spice. I acquired this bottle some time ago when a specific distillery was releasing its initial products, but unlike the “Original” and “Peated” versions (both of which I enjoyed), I'm only now getting around to opening this one. It's my least favorite bottling from that distillery's “1770” series to date. The fruity, rich character of the distillate I've detected in all their other products is absent here, most likely due to the additional distillation run, I suspect. The hot, sharp spice notes overpower mixers and leave a sour aftertaste when diluted. It's young, bright, fiery, and metallic overall. Subsequent Triple Distilled versions have been released, but based on this batch, I don't feel motivated to try them. “Adequate”: 74/100 (2.25 stars)

(Once Upon a Whisky – Glasgow Distillery Virtual Tasting, January 25, 2021). Nose: Toffee, caramel, fruity - cherries & berries Palate: Orchard fruit - pear & apples, spices, cocoa, fennel Finish: Tingling on the finish. Slightly tart & citrusy. Vanilla. Sour notes on the aftertaste. This is a refined and smooth dram. A little intense and alcoholic, but very easy to drink. Came in a tie for third place out of the five whiskies, receiving 5% of the vote for favorite of the night.
