Girvan 2006 Single Cask Exclusives Grain GV003 (The Creative Whisky Company)

Following a friend's harsh assessment, I wanted to get this one done quickly, as they suggested it would be challenging to forget. It was provided by a colleague from our distillery sample exchange group. I reviewed all available details about its production, trying to understand the intentions of both the distillery and the independent bottler. This grain spirit, originating from a lowland distillery mainly used for blends, comes from a limited number of casks chosen for a single barrel series. It underwent an unspecified finishing period in rum barrels, is presented at 50% ABV, and is uncolored and non-chill filtered. It produced rapidly forming, delicate legs in the glass and appears a pale gold. The aroma is, how can I describe it, unsettling. My immediate thought was of a high school woodshop. Sawdust, wood shavings, solvent, and cleaning fluid. A faint fruitiness is also present, but it feels out of place. I once made a birdhouse that smelled like this whisky. The taste brings pepper, oak, and lemon zest with a trace of that subtle fruitiness. Nothing lingers long before the bitter oak and dryness arrive to conclude the experience. I might say they spoil the sip, but there would have needed to be something pleasant to begin with, haha. It's just so strange. Grain whisky, in my mind, is smooth, sweet, and creamy. This possesses none of those qualities. Rum finishing, to me, suggests coconuts, suntan oil, and beaches. This has none of that, either. The overall finish is dry. Dry enough to make you cough up dust. I can't even imagine what mixer might work with this; it would likely ruin the mixer. However, our group has now tried Girvan, and we can move on. I'm giving it 2 stars because of that accomplishment and because it contains alcohol. My thanks to the provider. At least the evening's intoxication has commenced...haha.
