About this bottle

George Washington Distillery in Mount Vernon, Virginia, offers a limited edition unaged rye whiskey released only a few times annually in very small batches. This spirit, available at the distillery's visitor center, is based on a two-century-old recipe attributed to President George Washington. Its composition is 60% rye, 35% corn, and 5% malted barley, twice distilled in a copper pot still, and bottled at 43% ABV without any aging.

I'm not a rye expert, but I visited the distillery at Mount Vernon and paid $88 for 375 ml. This whiskey is clear; it's a white whiskey. After hearing about the ingredients, I inquired about gypsum, which is often in recipes found online or on TV shows. The Master Distiller at Mount Vernon stated there's no record of gypsum use in their whiskies. They only distill in March and November, so when it's sold out, it's gone. I purchased a bottle in April from the 2016 run, bottle #61. I prefer pot-distilled spirits over column-distilled ones. I found the uniqueness of this whiskey made the price worthwhile. I'll enjoy sharing it with friends who will appreciate it.

This limited whiskey from Mount Vernon is made annually using the original 18th-century recipe from historical records. It's unaged and surprisingly smooth, composed of 60% rye, 35% corn, and 5% malted barley, bottled at 43% ABV. Appearance: Clear Smell: Notes of grain, raw rye, raw corn, rye bread, and a rustic farm-like scent. Taste: More raw rye and corn sweetness, accompanied by rye bread and oats, with a somewhat thick consistency. Aftertaste: Brief, with traces of rye and plain oatmeal.

Went to Mt. Vernon July 2017. This rye is transparent and hasn't aged. 43% alcohol. The aroma is gentle, and I detected an undeveloped smell of grain, similar to sniffing uncooked corn grits. The taste is a little mineral, clearly rye, though not as fiery as anticipated. The end is brief and not heavy.

I was actually surprised by how sippable this was. Among the white dog products I've tried, I'd rank this at the top. You definitely get the rye flavors but no harsh alcohol burn.

Unaged rye offers a very unique flavor.

It's decent for a whiskey with no aging.
