Fuyu Small Batch Blended Japanese Whisky

There's a discussion about whether Fuyu is "genuine" Japanese whisky. To me, that's irrelevant as long as it's palatable. In a blind tasting against other Japanese whiskies, Fuyu caught my attention on both the aroma and taste. It presented a salty, soy, and smoky character, which is unusual for the Japanese whiskies I know. Typically, I expect a sweeter, fruitier whisky with notes of rice and grains – elements absent in Fuyu. If this is positive or negative is a matter of personal opinion. For me, this whisky was smooth and not very complex. It was pleasant because there was no harshness, but Fuyu lacked depth compared to other spirits with higher scores. If I sampled this blind, I would have confidently identified it as a bourbon. It's very sweet yet easy to drink. While not the most intricate whisky available (especially considering it's Japanese), it's by no means a bad beverage. I anticipated more peat, but there was barely any.

This "imitation" Japanese whisky is pretty pedestrian. It's quite harsh and has a saccharine, rye-like quality that suggests it was matured in new, inexpensive American Oak, making its cost unjustified, even when masked in mixed drinks. I wouldn't purchase it a second time.

The aroma is intensely alcoholic and off-putting. However, the taste is unexpectedly mild and bland given that. It has a prolonged finish, reminiscent of leather. This ranks among the best Japanese whiskies I've sampled, likely due to its resemblance to Irish whiskey compared to others.

Light and straightforward, with both sweet and savory elements. It's suitable for mixing. For individuals seeking an easy-drinking and palatable spirit, this is quite good.
