Nose: Spicy caramel, cinnamon, allspice, clove, black pepper, toasted vanilla bean, eucalyptus, mint, medicinal cherry, orange peel, moderate oak, and moderate ethanol. Palate: Toffee, caramelized vanilla, intense rye spice, black pepper, tobacco, mint, charred orange peel, and cherry syrup. The finish is medium-long with spicy oak, brown sugar, black pepper, clove, herbs, and potent ethanol. This is the third Four Roses barrel strength recipe I've encountered in the past two years, after years of missing out. Each time, I'm less impressed, and the cost continues to rise. At the $75-80 price point they were a few years ago, I'd gladly purchase any barrel pick. However, they are now approximately $100. I don't believe the current price reflects the value. This particular OBSK pick exhibits some appealing notes, but I find it too young. It finishes very hot considering the proof. I actually declined the chance to buy two other local picks this week due to my dissatisfaction with this bottle.

This wasn't the exact Four Roses bottling, but it was an OBSK. Curiously, my initial experience wasn't favorable. However, after some time, it rapidly became a cherished bottle, and I appreciated finishing it with a sibling. The peppery character of the OBSK perfectly suits my palate, and I'll make a point to purchase one whenever I encounter it.

From a specific store pick, aged 9 years and 7 months, at 52.9% ABV, from warehouse PN, barrel 16-1K Aroma: cedar, pine, marshmallow Taste: not overly spicy but has a subtle sweetness, like vanilla and marshmallow. Mid-palate reveals nutty characteristics. More rye and mint emerge towards the back, with oak lingering. A well-crafted spirit.
My preferred pour so far. Strong alcohol aroma. It has a bite like a good rye. The spice is consistent throughout, yet it delivers a pleasing sweetness that balances it. Enjoy it neat; even the harshest winter day won't bother you.
