Four Gate Rye DownUnder (Batch 16)

I've received an excessive amount of these bottles and samples and haven't documented my thoughts on nearly enough. Regardless. Nose - Unlike batch 24, which is high in rye, this one is significantly fruitier and more accessible. It possesses sweet, subtle rye notes, characteristic of a high-rye bourbon. Taste - Mint, rye, brown sugar, and robust, lingering oak. Simply great, yet somewhat as anticipated. I've had a few pours and my notes aren't the most detailed here. However, overall, this is a very well-crafted whiskey. Excellent finish. Wonderful mouthfeel. Great body. That said, it has a sharp alcohol presence and is acidic. It comes across as younger than an exceptional whisky should. But honestly, it's just too hot and overly alcohol-forward. This happens when you use great casks for finishing but employ younger spirits. I realize the distillery team will claim the price is justified by the cost. They are attempting to validate secondary barrel pricing, which is not justifiable. They are indeed overpaying! And we, the consumers, shouldn't have to cover their errors... yet simultaneously, they are achieving wonders with these finishes. And this is among their finest. 3.25 - this represents a fantastic overall experience. It's somewhat young. It's not groundbreaking. But it's a masterclass in blending and quality components. If I had purchased a bottle for $200, I wouldn't be upset, but I also wouldn't buy another.

The aroma presents toasted marshmallows, burnt brown sugars, and some vanilla. The taste features caramel, vanilla, and dark fruits, offering a delightful experience. The finish coats the tongue, feeling very thick. The lack of a strong "Kentucky hug" is a letdown for me. Overall: It earns 4 out of 5 stars. The main drawback of this brand is its pricing. No serving is worth the minimum base price of $200. That's my primary objection to their products. Similar to another brand, why such a high starting price? Additionally, if you enjoy a particular sweeter expression, this is a comparable option in terms of cost that might be more readily available in some areas.
