First Call Kentucky Straight Rye

This was suggested by an employee at my local Total Wine when I mentioned I wanted Bulleit rye but they only had liters available. I had hoped it would be similar to Bulleit, but it's actually the mildest rye whiskey I've tried so far. I couldn't find details on the mash bill - all I know is it contains at least 51% rye. It's 90 proof, aged a minimum of three years according to the label, and has a coppery gold appearance. On the nose, this is a straightforward whiskey. I detected a light hint of alcohol and spicy grass. Upon tasting, I experienced a creamy mouthfeel. There was some spice, but much less than I anticipate from a rye. A faint grassy note is present, with an underlying milk chocolate flavor. The finish is short, offering notes of chocolate, oak, and spice. It's an adequate whiskey, and unlike some others I've sampled, I won't discard it, but it doesn't justify the price.

A complex Straight Rye Whiskey crafted by Master Distiller Kevin Curtis for IJW Whiskey Company in Kentucky. It's made from a mix of 40 different mash bills, aged in charred American oak barrels, and bottled at 90 proof. It offers an aromatic opening with notes of grain, fruit, wood, and spice. The complex character develops hints of rye, citrus peel, and vanilla, leading to a long, warming finish with oak and smoke flavors. December 2021 / August 2022

Smooth and enjoyable with undertones of spice and sugar. There's a subtle hint of cinnamon on the initial taste followed by a savory finish. While I haven't typically favored rye in the past, I find this one quite appealing.

A very delicate nose, featuring notes of fruit and caramel. It's a little sharp considering the proof, but acceptable for its price point.

Possesses a roasted, smoky character. Not suitable for use in a sweet Old Fashioned, as it clashes with the sweetness of orange and cherry.

Has a somewhat soapy quality with a prominent creme de menthe on the finish. Not particularly enjoyable.
