Fireside Straight Bourbon

The light, clear color is off-putting. The aroma is mostly vanilla with no oak presence. There's a slight burn, but the 40% ABV seems pleasant and accessible. The taste is sweet, almost candy-like, dominated by vanilla and apple fruitiness, with a hint of wood on the finish. Overall, it's a weekday whiskey, suitable for beginners due to its approachability and inoffensiveness. It lacks depth and burn, offering a singular vanilla profile.

Calling this a bourbon leads one to expect hints of oak, vanilla, or caramel, which are disappointingly absent. Instead, it presents as a peppery, smoky, somewhat fruity whiskey that suits mixed drinks better than sipping neat. After letting the glass sit, the expected bourbon characteristics finally emerge.

I found this better served on the rocks than in a mixed drink. It didn't complement the mashed fruit well, but chilled, it was smooth, had a pleasant mouthfeel, and a slight burn. This has improved with subsequent batches from the distillery, perhaps better barrels; it's more intricate than my initial tasting two years prior.

The aroma is rather dull and weak. Light floral and honey scents. The palate is watery and lacks flavor. A tiny hint of spice at the end. The finish is extremely brief and unremarkable. I would offer this to someone who dislikes whiskey but wants to drink it neat. Was this aged for only 3 months?

The bourbon is acceptable by itself. However, the distillery crafts an old fashioned using it, which is then aged for 45 days in the bourbon barrel. That barrel-aged cocktail made with this bourbon is superb.

Not bad considering the cost. It's distinctive, and quite easy to drink. The aroma presents dark fruit, marshmallows, and peanuts. The taste is sweet and woody, with a smooth, brief finish showing a touch of caramel. A solid budget-friendly choice for sipping.
