Filibuster The Boondoggler

The nose initially presents alcohol, as expected at 90 proof, but after resting, I detect almonds and cherries. It has a slight bite, again, as expected at 90 proof. It then opens up considerably, maintaining the almond and cherry notes. It actually brought to mind Rittenhouse with its cherry and spice, but with a more pronounced almond, almost like a good Irish whiskey. The sherry finish emerges strongly at the end, providing balance. It's certainly distinctive and offers excellent value for its price.

Batch #40 Young grain and a subtle hint of buttered popcorn on the nose. The palate begins with that hint of butter before shifting to sweet, juicy fruit from the barrel finish, concluding with some rye spiciness. In a way, this could be seen as a more affordable, entry-level relative of some of the Barrell blended finished whiskeys. Purchased on sale for $20; considering the price, it's a pleasant, light, sweet sipper.

This offering is not too bad. Black coffee and apple pie notes are present, reminiscent of something my grandfather would appreciate. A subtle wine influence can be detected, although the overall taste leans more towards darker profiles. A pleasant, enduring finish with hints of tobacco and oak. The aroma is quite pronounced, featuring some citrus and bready characteristics. It's a decent pour, and considering the cost, I would purchase it again.

From the 2020 Bourbon Advent calendar. This was much more enjoyable than the other Filibuster expression in the calendar. The sherry finish is quite nice. It doesn't appear to be available in Ohio or Kentucky. I suppose we'll have to wait until our next drive through Virginia.

The scent is complex, with notes of berries and rye. The taste features rye, peppercorn, and maybe sherry. It's an interesting but young spirit. It's not nearly as harsh as some young spirits, but it would benefit from aging longer in the barrel.

Less intense than I recall, likely because I've sampled many barrel proof spirits recently. It has a fruity palate and a light finish. An easy-drinking spirit, at the very least.
