I'm searching for an authentic Virginia whiskey that could become my go-to... acquired this bottle some time ago for a wheated tasting with some friends. Nose presents a smoky caramel with a bit of rye spice behind it. Very oak-forward, followed by the caramel with a pleasant mouthfeel. On the second sip, the rye spice emerges through the oak. Further tasting reveals an odd bitterness that intrudes. The finish is slightly stronger than I prefer, but the duration is quite standard. Overall, I believe it lacks the sweetness I desire. The caramel is present but isn't the dominant element as I'd want my whiskey to be. Additionally, the peculiar bitterness is off-putting.
