Fettercairn 40 Year

To mark my 300th tasting, I opened my sample of this 40-year-old single malt from Fettercairn, distilled in December 1977. It aged in ex-bourbon white oak barrels, was finished in Apostoles sherry casks, and bottled at 48.9% ABV. The aroma offers cavernous minerality, dusty leather-bound books, and creamy tropical fruits, then cocoa-dusted prunes, caramelized peaches, dehydrated apricots, and orange blossom, transitioning to sweet pipe tobacco and antique polished mahogany with a moderate ethanol burn. The taste presents a rich, oily mouthfeel, starting with sweet, creamy tropical fruits that quickly shift to earthy notes of dusty leather-bound books and cavernous minerality, then toasted walnuts, black tea, and cocoa-dusted prunes, followed by caramelized peaches, dehydrated apricots, and mandarin orange peel. It concludes with sweet pipe tobacco and freshly lacquered antique mahogany, accompanied by a moderate ethanol burn. The finish is long, featuring high-percentage dark chocolate, dehydrated figs, light tropical fruits, cavernous minerality, black tea, and dusty old leather-bound books, lingering for minutes. The 40 years of age are evident in the rich, old polished wood notes throughout, which never become overly bitter. Creamy tropical fruits, citrus, and a mild sour sherry harmonize beautifully with exceptional balance, leading into a long, lingering finish that slowly reveals additional flavors. This is an absolute masterpiece, showcasing the potential of a well-aged whisky. However, at over $3000, it's not a bottle I'll be purchasing anytime soon.
