About this bottle

Edgefield Distillery, owned by McMenamins in Troutdale, Oregon, produces this Hogshead Whiskey. It is an aged version of their 'White Dog Whiskey,' which is made from 100% malted barley—the same grain used for the pub's beer. The spirit is distilled using a copper and stainless steel still, inspired by a German Holstein pot still. The specific barrels used and the duration of aging are not disclosed. The whiskey is bottled at 46% ABV.

Misty Freeman 3.0

The aroma and flavor remind me of a young bourbon, but with a lot of intense oak flavor. There is a hint of cherry and more oak on the finish. After sampling Redbreast 12, I noticed this one has a similar aroma and flavor profile. They are both labeled as "Pot Distilled", which might be a contributing factor.

Kiara Mullen 4.0

The high score is mainly because this was the first decent whiskey I had that was better than mid-shelf, a long time ago. I considered Hogshead a treat back then, and I would purchase a bottle each year for my birthday. My palate has changed since then, but I still like this whiskey.

Jett Bostic 3.8

The aroma is light and sweet, with honey and mild spice. It feels more substantial than many single malts, due to the slightly elevated alcohol content and some bourbon-like spicy characteristics. The oak tannins are subtle, providing a quiet maturity. This is a robust malt offering from an innovative company.

Tracy Oglesby 3.8

A subtle, dark, and woody aroma, perhaps with some toffee. It has a fairly light body, with good oak and spice notes on the palate, and excellent toffee flavors. The only drawback is its body; more richness would enhance it significantly.

Chelsey Lunsford 4.0

A very good whiskey. Smooth and easy to drink, with just a whisper of burn and sweet spice beneath the main flavors.

Erma Medley 4.0

Smooth and perhaps a bit too effortless to drink. Only a faint hint of smoke on the nose.
